Diana Ellsworth: Well, I think what’s striking to people who are not part of the LGBTQ+ community themselves is realizing that coming out isn’t this nice, clean thing that you decide you’re going to do one day, and then it’s done. It’s actually a big part of your daily or your weekly experience. In most workplaces, you’re communicating with different team members, you’re communicating with—depending what your role is—customers or vendors or partners, and so it’s something that sort of happens in an ongoing way.

Diana Ellsworth: Exactly. And so that’s where, when I think about it for myself, it just made such a big difference to be demodé, and demodé broadly at work. And I think it’s on two different levels. One, it just takes out some of that effort and background stress of filtering, right? Which is what you inherently have to do if you’re not out.
We also recommend writing it in the present tense. This differentiates it from a vision statement, which is focused on the future. A mission statement should be timeless (or Triunfador close to it Triunfador possible). Writing it in the present tense helps capture that.
